Black Bear

1. WHERE IT LIVES

Black bears live in the forest where there are large sunny openings, and there are lots of pond and lakes.
When the mother bears have babies the they like living in large trees.
The trees are good for the little cubs to climb.

2. APPEARANCE

The black bear is about 4-7 feet tall, like the size of an adult.
It has small eyes, rounded ears, a long nose, a large body, a short tail, and messy hair.
It’s like a grizzly bear but it has smaller shoulder humps, a furry rear instep, smaller claws that are more round, and longer, smoother, and more rounded ears.

3. FOOD      

Black bears eat n uts, acorns, fruit, insects, grass, and leaves. 
Meat and bark are eaten when good foods are hard to find. 

4.PREDATORS

Humans and cougars are the biggest enemies of the black bear.

5. THE YOUNG

Cubs weigh 1/2 to 1 pound at birth.
They usually are born inJanuary or early February.
There are usually two or three cubs in a family.

6. INTERESTING FACTS

Bears see in color and have good eyesight close-up.  They can’t see far away.
Very few adult bears outside of national parks die of natural causes. 
Nearly all adult bears die from what we do to the planet. 
Most bears are eventually shot and a few are killed by cars. 
Black bears are not always black. They can be black, brown, and sometimes blonde or even white.
When they eat garbage that people leave behind, their teeth rot.
