Moose |
1. WHERE IT LIVES |
 |
Moose live in all parts of Canada where there are forests and swamps.
In warm months they can be found near lakes and other bodies of water.
In winter moose move in deep into the forest. |

2. APPEARANCE |
A moose is a funny looking animal with long legs, big hoofs, a humpback and a short tail.
It also has big nose.
It can grow over 3 metres long, and can weigh 1200 pounds.
They have large horns 120-150 cm long. |
3. FOOD |
Moose eats plants that are near lakes and swamps.
They will wade in water to eat water weeds.
They will also stick there head underwater to get roots of plants.
They also feed on tree branches, leaves and roots. |

4.PREDATORS |
|
Man hunts the moose.
Wolves and bears eat the moose.
In winter when they are very hungry and weak the wolves hunt them. Moose can not run away in deep snow.
They are a very easy to kill in winter. |

5. THE YOUNG |
The young are called calves.
They are born in late spring.
They have reddish brown fur. By fall their fur is brown.
They can not walk for a few days after they are born.
By the time they are two weeks old they can walk with their mom and search for food.
In the fall they stop drinking their mom’s milk.
The young stay with their mom for about a year–until the mom is ready to give birth to a new baby. |

6. INTERESTING FACTS |
Boy moose are called bulls and girl moose are called cows.
They make strange grunting, and whistling noises.
They are usually seen at dusk. They often live alone.
They try to avoid humans, when scared they run away.
An angry moose can charge with its head down.
In summer boys fight each other for the girls.
In fall boy antlers fall off and in spring they grow new ones. |
