Beaver

1. WHERE IT LIVES

Beavers often live in forested areas, where there is water close by.

2. APPEARANCE

The beaver is the largest rodent in North America
An adult weighs from 16 to 32 kg.
A large adult beaver may measure 130 cm long, including its 30cm tail.

3. FOOD      

Beavers use their dams to store food for the winter.
They like to eat a lot of trees and shrubs.

4.PREDATORS

Wolves, coyotes, bears, lynx, and wolverines prey on beavers.
Humans used to trap beavers for their fur, also called their pelts.
When they are attacked, beavers getup on their hind legs, and loudly hiss or growl before lunging forward to bite their enemy.

5. THE YOUNG

Beavers usually have one litter of babies each year.
A baby beaver is called a kit.
There are three or four kits in each litter.
They are usually born in May or June.

6. INTERESTING FACTS

The beaver can see as well underwater as it can see on land.
Beavers move slowly on the land, but not in the water.
The beaver cuts down an average of 216 trees a year.
