Coyote

1. WHERE IT LIVES

Coyotes live in mountainous areas.
They also live in the prairies of North America.
They can survive in the north because of their thick layer of fur.
Their homes range from the mountains of Alberta to the prairies of Saskatchewan.

2. APPEARANCE

Coyotes look like a more scraggly version of a regular pet dog.
They have big, yellow eyes, and have big, bushy tails.
Their coat colors vary from yellowish brown to a more grayish color.
The color will extend to the neck of the coyote.
The coyote has a long nose and a flat forehead, and their tail is really bushy. Coyotes are around the size of a fox and a wolf or a larger house dog.

3. FOOD

Coyotes eat squirrels, mice, prairie dogs and rabbits.

4.PREDATORS

Coyotes don’t have many predators except for one, humans.
Humans kill them because they are afraid of them.
Sometimes coyotes are killed because they are too close to the town or city.
Farmers sometimes shoot, poison or trap them because the coyotes are blamed for killing the live stock.

5. THE YOUNG

Before the babies are born the mother makes a suitable den.
That’s also where the mother has her babies.
The female coyote has around 6 babies.
She takes good care of them until they can hunt on their own.

6. INTERESTING FACTS

There have been a couple times when a coyote has tried to eat a house cat; to stay safe, the cat will make friends with a big dog who can help protect it.
Coyotes are not afraid of humans. They look to us as a source of food.
