Red Fox |
1. WHERE IT LIVES |
The Red Fox prefers to live at the edge of forests, near marshes, and around farmland.
Other areas Red Foxes live in are beaches, prairies, woodlands, arctic tundra, and cities.
Many Red Foxes are starting to live near, or in cities.
They live in dens in these areas. |

2. APPEARANCE |

The red fox is a small, dog like mammal.
They have dark brown to orange fur.
They also have a wWhite neck and under belly.
Foxes have a pointy face and ears, and a large bushy tail.
Male foxes are a little bigger than female foxes.
Adult foxes weigh around 3.6 and 6.8 kg and are 90 -112cm in length.
One third of its length is its tail. |

3. FOOD |
Red Foxes eat mostly squirrels, hares, rabbits and mice in winter.
Sometimes they also eat chickens and other stray animals that live around farms.
In the spring they eat berries and plants.
They will also eat out of the trash cans in the cities. |

4.PREDATORS |
The Red Fox doesn’t have very many enemies.
Its only enemies are the Coyote, Bobcat, Lynx, Wolves and Humans. |
5. THE YOUNG |
|
There are four to nine pups in each litter of red foxes and they are usually born in March or April.
They are born with their blue eyes closed and brown fluffy fur.
Their eyes will later turn brown.
Their mother doesn’t leave them for two to three days, because she has to feed them with her milk. |

6. INTERESTING FACTS |
Did you know…?
Red foxes often live in empty wolf dens or enlarged ground squirrel or marmot burrows.
Foxes change these smaller dwellings to make their own dens fifteen to twenty feet long.
The red fox may partly bury extra food by covering it with soil, grass, leaves, or snow. |
