Summary of the event. What actually happens?

Softball can be played indoors or outdoors. Outdoor baseball takes place on a playing field. The playing field is always shaped like a diamond. The playing field also has four different plates. The first is called home plate, then first base, second base, and finally third base. The game is divided into three to nine innings. The objectives of the game are to hit the ball, run to all three bases, and try to get the opposing team out. Each time your teammates hit the ball, you run to another base until you reach the home plate once again. Your team must do this before you get three outs, or you’re out of there!

What does it feel like to participate?

If you ever participate in softball, this is what you can expect it to be like. You will hit the ball, and run to first base. Your other teammates will have to hit the ball, and you continue to run to the other bases. However, if you get out you will have to return to the bench. If your team gets three outs, then you switch to field. You will have so much fun playing softball! If you would like to play Olympic softball, remember to keep on practicing, and who knows you just might be playing with your favorite softball player!  

What kind of training is involved?

The training that is required in order to play softball can take a lot of hard work. The athletes need to start their training with lots of cardio. Cardio can be running, or jogging. They also have to practice their throwing arm. Many of these athletes also practice batting. Some softball players may even work out at a gym, in order to strengthen all of their muscles. Playing softball can take a lot of preparation.

What equipment do you need?

The softball athletes need lots of equipment in order to protect themselves, and play the game. Of course they need a softball, and a softball is always larger then a regular baseball. They will also need a bat which is almost always made out of aluminum alloy. Athletes should also have a batting glove (this is optional); the glove protects the batters hand from blisters. Fielders will also need a glove in order to catch the ball. The catcher will need a mask, to protect his or her face. All players should also have shin guards or knee pads. The batter should always wear a helmet, to protect his or her skull while batting and base running.

When and where is the event being held during the upcoming Olympics in Beijing?

This year, the softball event will be held at Fengtai Softball Field in Beijing. This event will run from August 12th-21st, 2008.
