There were no cell phones when the mines operated in the Drumheller Valley.  The brass tag was how the men communicated with each other.  Each miner had his own number on a brass tag.  When he went underground he took his brass tag with him and that is how surface workers knew who was underground.  When the miner came up from his shift, he returned his brass tag to the tag board.
