Crumbs

When the miners were eating their lunch, they would often leave crumbs for mice.  They wanted to keep these friends close because the mice could sense danger.

If a miner saw a whole bunch of mice scurry out of a mine tunnel that meant there may be a cave-in coming and it would be smart to exit with the mice.
