It was dirty in the mine.  There was a lot of coal dust and the men would be covered from head to toe in black coal dust when they came out of the mine. 

The miners wore work overalls and sometimes they would wear these overalls into the shower (in the washhouse) to get some of this coal dust off. 

They would then use their baskets to hang up these wet overalls so that they could dry.
