Painted Turtle

Appearance (What they look like)

The painted turtle is very colorful.
The top of the turtle's shell is dark brown, and on their stomach is orange and red with yellow markings.
The skin on its legs, tail and its head is black with bright yellow and red stripes and blotches.
The girl turtle is bigger than the boy.
Their shells can be 300mm long.

Habitat (Where they live)

The painted turtle can be found in Mexico or in Southern Canada.
They areland and water animal that can be found in ponds and slow moving rivers.
During the winter the turtles go to the bottom of rivers and breathe through their skin.

Diet (What they eat)

The painted turtle is an omnivore (eats meat and plants).
They eat snails, insects, crayfish, leeches, tadpoles, small fish and many types of plants.

Babies

The mom turtle digs a hole in soft sand that has a lot of sun.
Then she lays about 3-15 eggs, covers the eggs with sand and then leaves.
The eggs will hatch about 100 days after, dig out of the hole and be on their own.

Enemies

Some enemies for the painted turtle are skunks, raccoons, and hawks when they are on land.
In the water the painted turtles also have some enemies like large fish.
The painted turtle has to be careful when they are moving to another pond or lake because they have to cross a road to get to the pond or lake and the cars can’t see the turtles crossing so they run over them.
