The grade one students are exploring what makes their community unique by looking at the significant features of Drumheller, Alberta.
ACTIVITY 1

Discuss what makes Drumheller unique. (If a new friend came to visit Drumheller for the first time, where would you take them?).  Students make a web in Kidspiration of the places they would take their friend.

ACTIVITY 3

Put students into groups (one group per destination).
Place students in their specific job and discuss roles (interviewer(s), photographer, and recorder).

ACTIVITY 4

1) Invite a visitor to come into the classroom to present and discuss what an interview is, good interview questions, and interview etiquette.

2) As a class, discuss basic interview questions for the destinations.
Example:
What is your name?
What is your job title?
What do you do?
Why do people come here?
What makes ________ unique to Drumheller?
How does __________contribute to our community?

3) Have specific groups write down interview questions that apply for their specific destination. Each group can present to the class and class member can contribute questions.

4) Students type their interview questions in Microsoft Word

ACTIVITY 5

Invite a photographer to the classroom to demonstrate how to take a good picture. Show examples of quality and poor quality pictures.  Students can practice taking pictures around the school.

There are art projects to accompany each destination.

As a class, create a Windows Movie Maker production of the journey into what makes our community unique.
