The term Shogun was first introduced during the Heian period (794-1185) and was originally given to the commander of the Imperial armies. By the beginning of the Edo period, the term shogun changed. How did it change? What did it mean to be a shogun? What did the position of shogun look like at the end of the Edo period?
As a shogun, who do you have power over? What kind of authority do you have? Your task is to create a PowerPoint presentation that shows the evolution of the Shogun. You will create a slide for each of the following questions:
- How did the shogun contribute to Japan’s isolation?
- How did the shogun deal with foreign trade?
- How did the shogun establish control over the social hierarchy?
- Who did the shogun have power and authority over?
- What challenges did the shogun face?
- What caused the Shogunate to collapse?
- What relationship existed between the Emperor and the shogun?
