STEPS 5 & 6

Step 5
Determine the three most important reasons why Japan should abandon the policy of isolationism and the three most important reasons it should remain isolated.  Make your assessments from the point of view of someone at the time that cares about the well-being of the country but has not yet decided if isolationism is a wise policy.

Step 6
Locate yourself in one of the four corners of the classroom to represent your degree of agreement or disagreement with the proposition to continue with isolationism.  (Strongly Agree, Agree Somewhat, Disagree Somewhat, Strongly Disagree)  Discuss the topic with students in your corner.  Be prepared to debate this issue as a class.  Be prepared to back up your reasons for or against with historically accurate, specific details that give insight into your group’s perspective.
