Step 1
With a partner choose an image from the Edo period image bank, and one image from the Meiji period image bank.

Discuss these images with your partner using the “who, what, when, where, why and how” chart. Analyze your images and write your ideas on the chart. 

Step 2

1. Each group will present their information to the class as they display their image.
2. After the presentation, your teacher will give you the factual information on your image.
3. During the presentations, on the “Drawing Conclusions” chart, describe how each piece of art or artifact supports or challenges the following statements:

Edo Japan was an isolated, protected world.
Meiji Japan was open to the influence of the world.

Support your answer with solid evidence from the things you have learned about Japan in this unit.
