Purpose

Through this project the students will be exploring life in Meteghan, Nova Scotia.  Each of the tasks is designed to guide the students through an aspect of Maritime and/or Acadian life.

Action Plan

We will begin our project with a quick introduction to the community of Meteghan.  Information such as where it is located (i.e. Nova Scotia, Canada) will be shared with the class, but most of it will be discovered along our journey.  Then it will be revealed how we are going to share everything we have learned – a TV show!

Next, the students will explore the website for the project, particularly the tasks section.  While doing this they will be brainstorming ideas for each segment (task) for the show.

Once the excitement has died down a little, we will choose 2 or 3 students for each task.  Each group will be in charge of what they are going to say in that segment of the show and what it will look like.  For example, what would those people be wearing, what kind of props or displays would they need to relay their information, etc.  To help them understand what the final project will look like, they will have the opportunity to watch a portion of a real morning show (i.e. Breakfast Television, Canada AM, Live with Regis and Kelly).

While working on these tasks, the groups will be informally sharing what they are learning with everyone else in the class.  Some of these tasks may be the result of the whole class working together.

For the conclusion of the show, the entire class will be participating in the Bon Tintamarre parade.  Each student will be responsible for their own costume and noise maker.

Once we have our “scripts” and “sets” for each segment, we will begin filming.  Using Movie Maker, the final show will be edited for public release! There is a screen pre-prepared for your use, if you so choose, to open the Film Segment.

Once our project is complete the students will complete the self-checklist.  While reliving the fun we had and discussing everything we learned about Meteghan, we will share any similarities and differences we noticed between the communities we have studied this year as well as our own.

Print Material

Many of the tasks require the students to look up information in text books we use.  These are part of the Many Voices Grade Two Social Studies program published by Pearson Education Canada.

The titles of the books used are Looking at Places, Looking at People, Looking at Work, and Tell Me a Story.
