SUMMARY ASSIGNMENT/YOUR CHALLENGE

Participate in a four- corners debate that discusses, analyzes and evaluates responses to the question:  Is the present and planned future development in the Oil Sands industry in Alberta sustainable both economically and environmentally? Consider social and investment/resource sustainability as well.

Step 1- guess what, you’ve already completed this!

You have been introduced to the concept of Sustainability,  gone through the History of Oil and Gas Development in Alberta, and looked at the current status of Alberta’s Oil Sands from both the perspective of an Alberta Government document and a CBC documentary.

Step 2 - Determine your position:

Considering all the factors – economically, environmentally, socially, investment/resource wise, is the present and planned development of the Oil Sands industry in Alberta sustainable?
Do you strongly agree, agree, disagree or strongly disagree in terms of sustainability?
Make some notes that will help you defend your position.   Use hard facts and statistics where possible.  You may need to do some additional  research to supplement  your defense of your position.  Prepare visuals such as maps, charts and diagrams  to add to your presentation of your position if this is appropriate.
When the debate begins, you will be asked to move to the area of the classroom that best represents your position on the issue.   The number of students representing each position will be noted.

Consider the tips given on pg. 113 of Exploring Globalization for getting the most out of a four-corners debate.

Step 3 - Present your position – and be prepared to listen to others present theirs.

After hearing all the presentations, you will have an opportunity to change your position.  You may have heard persuasive evidence that causes you to reconsider your position.  If you decide to change your position, move to another area of the classroom.

Step 4

When the debate ends, the number of students in each area of the classroom will reflect the views of this particular group of students.
Sum up the debate, commenting on
- the process and main discussion points
- whether, how, and why your position or the position of your classmates has changed
- the quality of evidence presented
- the value of this kind of debate as a learning tool
